The Academy Awards, commonly known as the “Oscars,” are moving this year. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has moved their 82nd annual award ceremony from February to March this year to avoid competing with the 2010 Winter Olympics. Previously, Oscar night and the closing ceremonies of the Winter Games were scheduled for the same night.

The Academy Awards recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. The Academy has been distributing awards since 1927. Academy members recognized the need to reward outstanding achievement in moviemaking and to encourage excellence. The first ceremony was held in 1929 at a private banquet in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The list of awardees had been published some months earlier. The following year, the Academy kept the awards list secret until the night of the banquet to heighten suspense. The current convention of opening the envelope to reveal the winner on stage was not adopted until 1941.

There is no clear reason why the statuettes are called “Oscars.” One story claims that Academy librarian Margaret Herrick once remarked that the award resembled her Uncle Oscar. The term was used as early as 1932. In 1939, the nickname was officially accepted. Since 1950, awardees must agree that neither they nor their heirs may sell the statuettes without first offering to sell them back to the Academy for US$1.

A popular pastime while watching the awards ceremony is to play “Oscar Bingo.” Viewers make certain guesses before the show, such as:

  • Number of times a winner’s agent is mentioned or thanked
  • Number of jokes about how heavy the statue is (it weighs 8.5 pounds)
  • Number of winners who thank their spouses
  • Number of winners who say "good night" to family left at home for the evening
  • Number of recipients who cry
  • Number of winners who are “music’d” off the stage when their speeches run too long
  • Number of times a nominee is shown clapping for themselves
  • Number of times a presenter has trouble reading from the teleprompter
Have fun and play Oscar bingo with your family or friends this year.
