"Our project was more than just a basement remodel. It was a transformation of a basic basement into 1,200 square feet of completely finished living space. We love showing it to our friends. Carmel Builders really is a company that defines excellence – a company and team you can trust. "

Visions Realized
As artists, Jean and Tom Sobon had long dreamed of converting their attic storage space into an art studio. For more than 25 years, Jean’s career as an art educator as well as the demands (and joys) of caring for her family, meant Jean had to “work with whatever space I had”. She envisioned her retirement working on her works of art in a studio within her own home. Tom, a sculptor and photographer, supported that vision seeing a space that could accommodate them both; she with her easels and paints and he with his photography and layouts.

In the fall of 2008, Jean and Tom met Carmel Builders President, Tom Weiher and the process of converting their dream into reality began. After planning and design, it took less than two months to remodel the attic space.
Here’s how Jean describes the new studio now:
“Since the remodeling of our second floor was completed I've been using the larger, new area for my mixed media work, which involves lots of very careful cutting and piecing of small pieces of papers and printed images to create collages. The light walls and excellent overhead lighting makes this part of my work so much easier on my eyes - and it's also a great area to photograph my work without flash. The filtered light through the skylight blinds adds a good balance to the color-balanced florescent lighting so my photo colors are close to true without having to adjust the camera color balance. I also want to add that the insulation job has made the second floor so cozy to work in that most of the time I have the heat vent off. I was concerned that we might have to add more duct work to heat/cool this area ---totally unnecessary!”
Dreams Fulfilled
As Jean developed and refined her unique style of painting and mixed media she also honed her talent. The newly created studio helped provide Jean with what she needed to realize another long time dream: permanently exhibiting her work in a studio with other professional artists.
On the 14th of January, 2010, The Fine Art Gallery in the Third Ward Art District opened its doors. The artists and their work were introduced. The response was enthusiastic, with rave reviews by attendees. The Fine Art Gallery’s crisp, open atmosphere highlights the quality of its artworks.
