Your holiday shopping isn't finished without thanking the people on whose services you rely. Deciding who should get a gift, who to tip, and how much to give can be yet another stressful aspect of the holidays. There's no right or wrong when it comes to tipping and gift giving.
Do what you can—it’s still the thought that counts. However, here are a few guidelines that can help you decide what to give:
Child Care
- Babysitter: tip equal to one or two night’s pay and a small gift from the child.
- Nanny: tip equal to one or two week’s pay and a small gift from the child.
- Daycare providers: $20 to $70 to each person who gives direct care, and a small gift from the child.
- Teachers: a $25 gift if school policy allows.
- Coaches, tutors: a small gift from the child.
The Office
- Assistant: gift or gift card ($50 or more in value); the value should depend on your position in the company and the assistant’s length of service.
- Boss: Gift valued at $50 or less, so it’s not viewed as a bribe; group gifts are a good way to avoid this perception.
Note: It’s a good idea to avoid gifts that are too personal, like perfume or clothing.
Home Care
- Housekeeper: tip equal to one week’s pay.
- Trash collectors: $15 to $20 each
- Parking attendants: $10 to $35 each.
- Gardeners: $20 to $50, depending on how often they provide service.
- Pool cleaner: tip equal to the cost of one service, if your pool is open during the winter months.
- Doormen: $20 to $100, depending on how many and how much they do for you.
- Superintendent: $20 to $100
- Newspaper carrier: $10 to $30.
- Postal carriers or package couriers: gift valued at $20 or less.
Note: Some package delivery companies limit the gift value and discourage or prohibit cash.
Other Services
- Hairdresser/Manicurist: tip equal to the cost of one session.
- Personal trainer/massage: tip equal to the cost of one session.
- Dog walker: tip equal to one to two week’s pay.
- Dog groomer/sitter: small gift or tip equal to about half the cost of a regular session if the same person grooms your dog all year.
- Home health/nursing home employees: if policies permit, a gift that can be shared, like candy or food items.
Give the tip or gift in person whenever possible and include a short, heartfelt note thanking the recipient for their hard work.
