Remembrance Day

The day of poppies.

For millions of Canadians the poppy has long been the flower of Remembrance. It originally was a reminder of the blood-red flower that grew in the fields where many Canadians died during World War I in Flanders. It remains the flower of Remembrance. Remembrance Day is observed on November 11th throughout Canada, and often the well-known poem "In Flanders Fields" is recited.  It was written by Canadian John McCrae.

We will remember them.

Do you need to replace your hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors can last over 100 years. They can sometimes be brought back to life by refinishing.  This is not always possible though, if the floor is worn too thin or you want a very dissimilar look, such as a different grain or lighter finish.

Floors that have already been refinished several times may not have enough material left to withstand another sanding.  Check your floor, if you can see the nail heads at the seam,s or the tongue-and-groove edges of the wood are breaking up, it's been sanded too far, and it can’t be sanded anymore.

Signs of structural damage do not always mean that the flooring surface is lost. A bulging, buckling, or squeaking floor often means that the underlying structure needs repair. If the surface is not damaged, or damage is only in small areas, the flooring can be saved.

Often when homeowners discover a hardwood floor buried beneath other flooring they are at first elated, but as they remove the old flooring, they begin to fear that the entire wood floor will need to be replaced, due to old adhesives or carpet pads that have bonded to the hardwood floor, or other damage. This can sometimes be solved be sanding and refinishing rather than replacing the hardwood floor depending on the thickness left. Even floors that have been painted can be refinished as long as there is enough material left to withstand sanding.

Replacing an entire hardwood floor is a major job, but with the various engineered and prefinished hardwood floorings available, it can be well worth it. Modern hardwood floors are one of the longest lasting flooring options available, and almost never have to be replaced.  Call Dennis Bryant at 416-260-0818 to see if your floors can be refinished or need to be replaced.
