HomeMasons' Adam Baker reviews his checklist as he performs a WholeHome Care inspection
for one of our great customers
- Have your chimney flue checked and cleaned as necessary for the removal of dangerous creosote build-up.
- Check dryer vents for lint build-up and clogging. This, too is an often-overlooked potential fire hazard!
- Turn off outside faucets and disconnect / store your garden hoses.
- If you have electric heat tapes on any pipes, make sure they are turned on and functioning properly. These can be set-up with automatic thermostats and timers.
- If you have operable vents to your crawlspace, make sure they are closed for the winter.
- Make sure there is no standing water or excessive moisture in your crawlspace or against the foundation.
- De-thatch your lawn and rake-up fallen leaves, which helps prevent grass from smothering during the duration of winter.
- Remove all leaves and debris from roof and gutters.
- Stock up on sand and/or ice melt products in preparation for winter storms.
- Replace furnace and humidifier filters... should typically be checked / replaced monthly, but especially prior to heating season.
- Great time to have a complete heating systems checkup, including cleaning coils, performance checkup, and air leakage testing / inspection.
- Check weather-stripping around window and door openings.
- ICE DAMS are destructive to your roofing, gutters and exterior trim.
